60% of the cost is met by donors. Schools contribute the remaining 40%, pupil premium funding can be used.

City Year UK focuses on enabling young people aged 18-25 to volunteer in schools to support those furthest from opportunity, full-time, for a year. They are trained and coached to give much needed extra help to children who need it most. The idea is that they leave as leaders, committed to social change and ready to pursue their career. The volunteers become near-peer mentors & tutors and provide extra capacity throughout the school day – running clubs and offering coaching and learning support. Volunteers are in school full-time 4 days per week (the fifth day is for training). They can run breakfast clubs or after school clubs, support children academically 1:1 or in small groups, offer pastoral support, including with attendance and provide extra support at playtime.
